About “The Dream Song”
When I was younger I had very vivid dreams every night. Often, I had lucid dreams where I could direct the actions in the dream. I loved that. I’d wake up to an annoying alarm clock still caught up in the web of the dream, knowing I had to get up and get going. I hated that. But I did it anyway.
This song was copyrighted in 1997 but written much earlier, like 70’s. At some point in the
process of maturing, I lost that ability to have vivid, lucid dreams every night. I do occasionally
have a memorable dream but they are now rare.
The Dream Song reflects a younger me still working to prioritize my daily activities with sleep
always being number one on the list. Life was fine, everything was cool, but the dreams, man…
the dreams were hands down the best thing I had going for me. They were creative and probably helped me write a lot of songs because of the boost of creativity I got every night.
Gary Wright’s Dream Weaver song came out in 1975. I honestly don’t remember if I heard his
song before I wrote The Dream Song or not, but if I did, this is certainly an homage to Gary
Wright’s similar visions. I remember marveling that we had chosen similar words.
Track 7: The Dream Song – lead guitar: Dennis Flink, acoustic guitar and vocals: Pauline Trabert

The Dream Song

It’s early morning
Gotta tear myself away
From the dreams that seem so real
Gotta live another day
I’ve got troubles hanging on my guitar strings
I’ve got blues outside my door
But I’ll make it through the day the way I always do
Til I can lay in bed and dream some more
Til I can lay in bed and dream some more
It's not a bad life
I don’t need an escape
But there’s nothing real that can compare
To the visions on the black velvet drape
And when the Dreamweaver meets me
He takes me wherever I want to go
I see the way things are and the way that they should be
But which is which is sometimes hard to know
Which is which is sometimes hard to know
It's early morning
Got to tear myself away
From the dreams that seem so real
Gotta live another day
Gotta live another day
