From the recording Child of the 60's
About “Truck Driving Man”
This song is written for truck drivers’ wives as much as for the truckers
themselves. It was inspired by a man I knew named John, a long-haul trucker in
the 1970s and ’80s, and was requested by his wife, Yvonne, the mother of his
three sons.
The song is told from the perspective of a strong, capable woman who
understands the demands of the trucking life, even as she feels the weight of
absence. She speaks honestly to her man about what that life requires of
everyone involved.
Many years have passed since John and Yvonne were among the living. Today,
there are more truckers on the road than ever, and many families still measure
time by miles traveled and days apart. This song is dedicated to the memory of
John and Yvonne, forever in our hearts.

You're a Truck Driving Man
Driving as far as you can
Often I wonder as you walk out the door
When will I see you again
You were gone for two weeks the last time
The time before that it was a month
Well it seems to me that the time spent apart
Makes our time together really count
Lord, I know the road don't own you
And I don't know nothing that can
You're gone like the wind and as stubborn as a mule
When you're a Truck Driving Man
The kids ask about you every hour on the hour
Where'd he go and when'll he be home
They miss you so much that it could break your heart
If your heart weren't out on the road
Lord, I know the road don't own you
And I don't know nothing that can
You're gone like the wind and as stubborn as a mule
When you're a Truck Driving Man
You're a Truck Driving Man
Driving as far as you can
Often I wonder as you walk out the door
When will I see you again
Often, I wonder as you walk out the door
When will I see you again
Often, I wonder as you walk out the door
When will I see you again
