About “The Same Old Story”
This song looks back on a relationship that didn’t quite become a lasting love
affair. It isn’t a sad song so much as a clear-eyed reflection.
Most of us have been there at least once: loving someone, enjoying the
relationship, wanting it to fit into our lives, but then not wanting the same future. In
this story, one person wanted marriage, while the other needed to be wanted
simply for who she was.
The “key to your heart” represents an attempt to understand what truly matters to
someone else. When that effort isn’t enough, the relationship fades into what
becomes the same old story - a fire that burned bright and then faded away.

I found the key to your heart
Hoping to unlock the part of you
That could become a part of me
But it was not to be
You were looking for a lover and a wife
I couldn’t commit my life
No not my life
I just needed you to want me
There are many ways to describe our love affair
The feelings shared
But it comes out sounding like The Same Old Story
A fire that died a faded glory
We part as friends and as it ends
I know I won’t forget you
How could I forget you
But I hope we never meet again
There are many ways to describe our love affair
The feelings shared
But it comes out sounding like The Same Old Story
A fire that died a faded glory
I found the key to your heart
Hoping to unlock a part of you
That could become a part of me
But it was not to be
It was not to be
Not to be
